Starting off the 2017 year in the right tone is always needed to have a good season. Not being motivated during your “build” blocks can really have an affect later on as this time on the bike is apparent to how much one can do later in the season.
Luckily, I got to get out to the sun and log some good quality miles, breaking up the winter trainer time. This is a change for me as normally February is typically the time for southern training camps, but I was happy to head down a bit earlier and stay with my coach Adam Morka and Emily Batty down in Tucson, Arizona. Tucson, for being a desert, is a very nice place with some decent routes to ride and of course, the legendary Mount. Lemmon!
This first day I got there, wrecked from the whole travel day thing, we did a small hike up a mountain close by and then settled in for the night, trying to get accustomed to the heat so I wasn’t sweating just sitting around… But I was just buzzin’ to get outside for a ride on my Norco Tactic!
The first day, we went out for a solid ride to Saguaro National Park and doing some laps there, getting the travel out of the legs but also setting the tone right for the block of riding I was down there for.
The second day, my eyes got opened up to the world of Crossfit! WHOA! After I was lucky enough to go and wake up at an amazing cafe called
Le Buzz. They have amazing pastries! Next up was to climb up Lemmon, which was about 2 hours to the top town, Summer Heaven. There we went to the legendary Cookie Cabin and, of course, I got a cookie.
On our rest day we went to Colossal Caves and went on a ½ mile tour underground! That was super cool and a great rest day activity! It was my night for dinner, so tuna steaks and Supercross were on the menu!
Thankful for the rest day, a 5 hour ride was up next. And I mean 5 hours of pedaling! It was a beautiful day with tons of sun so it was easy to do that ride! It was also Buddy’s (Emily and Adam’s Welsh Terrier’s) birthday! So lots of playing with him.
The last 36 hours in Tucson was amazing! Starting with Crossfit again, muscle ups were a part of the WOD (workout of the day)! Uh oh… But with help on ‘kipping’ technique, I was able to do 1 muscle up! Then back to Le Buzz and this time I got a Quiche and it was to die for!
And my trip was topped off with an authentic Mexican dinner and Gelato! Yummmmmm!
I can’t thank Emily and Adam enough for having me, as well as my parents for allowing me to start the 2017 season with all of their support again!
